Shillong,The Capital City of Meghalaya 

Introduction 
Shillong is a beautiful hill station which is situated in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is also the capital city of Meghalaya and situated at an altitude of 1496 m above sea level. Shillong is unique in its scenic beauty and culture. A fresh balmy air and a bracing climate makes Shillong a place for all seasons. The tribes of Khyrim, Mylliem, Maharam, Mallaisohmat, Bhowal and Langrim trace their descent from Shillong. The city of Shillong derives its name from the deity Shyllong or Lei Shyllong, who is worshipped at the Shillong Peak. It has always been the meeting point of traditional cultures and cosmopolitan styles. Apart from this, Picturesque landscape and amazing series of enchanting waterfalls, the captivating mountain peaks, transparent crystal clear blue water lakes, amazingly beautiful golf courses, historical museums and diverse variety of flora and fauna accentuates the beauty of this place and attracts numerous tourists from all over the country throughout the year.

History 
Shillong was a small village until 1864, when it became the new civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills. It remained the summer capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam for many years. In 1874, on the formation of Assam as a Chief Commissioner Province, it was chosen as the capital of the new administration. An earthquake destroyed the city in 1897, necessitating its complete rebuilding. In January 1972, Shillong became the capital of the newly formed state of Meghalaya.

Shillong is a most beautiful tourist destination in the state of Meghalaya. The city boasts of some very important historical as well as cultural heritage sites. Some popular attractions of Shillong include Shillong Peak, Police Bazar, Elephant Falls, Golf Course, Wards Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Don Bosco Museum and many more. Places to visit 

Wards Lake
Wards Lake is a beautiful lake in Shillong The serene horse-shoe shaped lake is frequented by tourists, honeymooners and picnickers. It also offers numerous recreational activities such as boating, walks along with cobble-stoned paths and fountain dancing.

Elephant Falls
Elephant Falls is a nice place to visit in Shillong. It is located in Upper Shillong area within the Eastern Air Command of Indian Airforce. The serene fall is a collection of three smaller falls that combine together to form the stream that falls over fern-covered rocks.

Lady Hydari Park
Lady Hydari Park is another tourist attraction in Shillong. It encompasses a wide variety of local flowering plants and orchids, and is landscaped in Japanese style. The park also features a mini zoo that comprises 73 species of birds, 140 of reptiles and other mammals.

Don Bosco Museum
Don Bosco Museum is a theme museum that has a repository of information on the entire north eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. The museum exhibits a wide collection of regional artwork, attires, accoutrements, handicrafts, ornamentation, photographs and weapons.
