Kolkata is the capital city of the Indian state of West Bengal. The city is located on the east bank of the Hooghly River and is also popularly known for its literary, artistic, and revolutionary heritage. It is also commonly considered as the Paris of the East as there's a happy amalgamation of different cultures, styles and moods, coupled along with numerous forms of industries and commerce and politics. The city is bequeathed with several honors such as 'Cultural Capital of India', 'the City of Processions' and 'City of Joy'. Kolkata was the capital of India during British rule. The city's documented history, however, begins with the arrival of the English East India Company in 1690, when the Company was consolidating its trade business in Bengal. Job Charnock, an administrator with the company was traditionally credited as the founder of the city. While the city's name was always pronounced Kolkata in the local Bengali language, its official English name was changed from Calcutta to Kolkata in 2001, reflecting the Bengali pronunciation. At present, although, it is no more the capital of India, it is the capital of West Bengal and is one of the most important place of cultural workshop and industrial center.

Places to visit
Howrah Bridge is one of the most popular bridge of India which is situated on the River Hooghly and connects the western bank of Kolkata to the eastern bank of Howrah. The bridge is 705m long and boasts of 8 lanes jointly 97m wide and is also known gateway of Kolkata.
Victoria Memorial is a major tourist attraction in Kolkata. It was built in the year of 1921 and designed by Sir William Emerson Who was a famous architect from the British Empire. It spreads over an area of 64 acres and is surrounded by a well maintained landscaped garden.
Birla Mandir is one of the most famous Hindu temple located in Kolkata. The architecture of the temple is very beautiful and made up of white marble. Messages and episodes from Bhagwad Gita are intricately carved band pictorially depicted on the marble walls. The electric diyas, jaw- dropping chandeliers and outright stone work finishing make it a delight to visitors.
Eden Gardens is the largest cricket stadium of India where people have witnessed the history of Indian cricket. It was established in the year of 1864, the first ever recorded test at the venue was held in 1934 between India and England and its first One Day International in 1987 between India and Sri Lanka. The Stadium undergone a tremendous modernization till date and currently can accommodate approx 66000 people.
Science City is a must visited place in the city of Kolkata. Space Theatre, Time Machine, 3D shows, Dynamotion, Natural Science Park, Dinosaurs Complex and Evolution Theme Park are the main attractions of the Science city. This city is maintained by the National Council of Science Museums.
Indian museum is one of the largest museum in Kolkata. There are over 60 galleries in the museum that has on display several artefacts and prehistoric objects.
